Strength Made Perfect in Weakness

Saint of the Day
St. Agatha

St. Agatha (d. c. 251) was a young Christian woman from Sicily, either Palermo or Catania, who consecrated her virginity to Christ. According to tradition she was arrested under the Decian persecution and subjected to terrible tortures when she refused the advances of the Roman prefect Quintianus. She died of her wounds in prison. She is the patroness of breast cancer patients, nurses, and the island of Sicily. Her name appears in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

Scripture Reading

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Reflection
St. Agatha endured horrific suffering for her faith and emerged with a courage that shamed her persecutors. Paul's words explain the paradox: human weakness creates space for the power of Christ to be visible. When we have nothing left to rely on but God, we discover that God is more than enough. Agatha's life is a testimony to grace that holds when everything else is stripped away.
Prayer for Today
I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.

Amen.
