Rock of the Church

Saint of the Day
St. Peter

St. Peter (d. c. 64–68 AD), born Simon bar Jonah, was a fisherman from Bethsaida called by Jesus to be an apostle. He became the leader of the Twelve and the first bishop of Rome. His letters (1 and 2 Peter) are included in the New Testament. After denying Christ three times, he was restored and commissioned to "feed my sheep." He was martyred by crucifixion under Nero, reportedly asking to be crucified head-downward as he considered himself unworthy to die as his Lord did.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 16:18-19

"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Reflection
The feast of the Chair of St. Peter celebrates the authority given to Peter and his successors to shepherd the universal church. What is striking is that Jesus gives this commission to the very man who had just been called "Satan" a few verses later — grace operates through imperfect vessels. The church belongs to Christ; Peter and every pope since are stewards, not owners.
Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus Christ, you calmed the wind and waves with your word. As I endure the uncertainty and confusion of a job search, I pray that you would calm my mind in this storm. Fill my heart with your peace and my mind with your wisdom. I praise you for everything you have given me and ask you with humble confidence to provide the right job for me now. Make clear your will for my life. May your grace, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with me always. In your name, Amen.

Amen.
