Salt and Light

Scripture Reading

Matthew 5:13-16

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Reflection
Jesus does not say "try to become" salt and light — he says you are these things. The task is not transformation but revelation: living in such a way that the character already placed in you by grace becomes visible. Saltiness preserves and flavors; light illuminates what is already there. Ordinary days in ordinary places are exactly where salt and light are needed most.
Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus
I know that all human relations take time
if they are to grow and deepen.
This is also true of my relations
with You, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
which must grow over the course of my life.
However, this growth is not automatic;
time alone means nothing
unless I add earnest efforts to it.

Amen.
