Saint of the Day
Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
The three archangels named in Scripture are Michael ("Who is like God?"), Gabriel ("God is my strength"), and Raphael ("God heals"). Michael is the warrior-protector who battles evil; Gabriel is the messenger who announces salvation; Raphael accompanies and heals. Together they represent the ways God acts through his messengers: defending, announcing, and restoring. Michaelmas has been celebrated in the Western Church since at least the 5th century.
Scripture Reading
Daniel 10:13
"The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia."
Reflection
On Michaelmas, the feast of Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, we are reminded that the battle for human souls is not fought in the visible realm alone. The angels are ministers of God, sent to serve those who are to inherit salvation. We are not fighting alone; we are held within a great company of heavenly allies whose commitment to our flourishing is fiercer than we imagine.
Prayer for Today
Lord, thank you for my beautiful family. It worries me that I cannot protect them from all of the evil in this world. I am on my knees asking for your help. Please watch over my family today when they step out the front door. Send an angel to guide them home safely and avoid any harm they may face. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Amen.
