The Beloved Physician

Saint of the Day
St. Luke the Evangelist

Luke was a physician and Gentile convert who became a companion of the Apostle Paul. He is credited with writing both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles — together the longest contribution to the New Testament by a single author. His Gospel is particularly noted for its emphasis on prayer, women, the poor, and the universal scope of salvation.

Scripture Reading

Luke 5:31-32

Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Reflection
St. Luke the Evangelist was a physician, and his Gospel is marked by an extraordinary tenderness for the broken, the outcast, and the sick. He gives us healings and parables that no other writer records. Christ as the Great Physician — one who seeks the sick rather than waits for them — is a distinctly Lukan portrait. Let Luke's Gospel remind you today that Jesus moves toward human brokenness rather than away from it.
Prayer for Today
Blessed Jesus, in the comfort of your love, I lay before you the memories that haunt me, the anxieties that perplex me, the despair that frightens me, and my frustration at my inability to think clearly. Help me to discover your forgiveness in my memories and know your peace in my distress. Touch me, O Lord, and fill me with your light and your hope. Amen.

Amen.
