Saint of the Day
St. Joseph
St. Joseph was the husband of the Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus Christ. A carpenter (or craftsman) from Nazareth of the lineage of David, he appears in the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. He received angelic direction at key moments: to take Mary as his wife, to flee to Egypt, and to return to Israel. He is the patron of the universal church, workers, fathers, and a happy death. His solemnity on March 19 is one of the principal feasts of the liturgical year.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 1:19-20
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."
Reflection
Joseph is a man of almost no words in the Gospels, but of enormous moral seriousness. Before the angel spoke to him, he was already choosing the merciful path — protecting Mary rather than exposing her. God then trusted that quiet, just man to be the earthly father of his Son. Fidelity without fanfare, faithfulness in the unseen moment — these are the hallmarks of Joseph's life and his gift to ours.
Prayer for Today
Lord, the eyes of my heart are on You and my confidence is in Your Word. Inspire, convict, teach and correct me I pray, through the Scriptures, and may I develop a teachable and correctable spirit, in submission to the leading and guidance of Your Holy Spirit.
Help me to look into the mirror of Your Word and let its truth search out areas in me that need to be rooted out. May I grow in humble obedience to Your ways and help me to reflect the love of the Lord Jesus in my walk and word. I ask this in Jesus' name,
Amen.
