Sorrow Turned to Joy

Wednesday, September 15, 2027 · Ordinary Time

Saint of the Day
Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the sufferings of Mary as she witnessed the passion and death of her son Jesus. The tradition identifies seven sorrows of Mary, beginning with Simeon's prophecy and culminating at the foot of the cross. This memorial invites us to reflect on Mary's courageous solidarity with Christ in his suffering and her role as a companion to all who grieve.

Scripture Reading

John 16:22

"So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."
Reflection
The memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows falls the day after the Exaltation of the Cross — sorrow and glory held side by side. Jesus's promise is not that sorrow ends today, but that when he is seen again, the joy will be unassailable. Mary stood at the foot of the cross holding both grief and faith simultaneously, which is itself a model for the Christian life.
Prayer for Today
Our Heavenly Father, we are gathered here today to pray for our brother/sister ________. He/she is facing a difficult situation right now, Lord, as you know and we ask that you bless him/her with your peace and hope. Give him/her strength to face the adversaries and to overcome the obstacles in his/her way. But above all, Lord, give him/her hope for the future. Amen.

Amen.
