Scripture Reading

Lamentations 3:32-33

But though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.
Reflection
Even in the rawness of Lamentations — a book written from the ruins of Jerusalem — this is the testimony: God does not afflict willingly. Suffering allowed by God is not the full expression of his character; his compassion and steadfast love are. When we are in the ruins, this word keeps a door open: the God who grieves with us will also show compassion.
Prayer for Today
Lord, we pray for those who mourn, for parents and children, friends and neighbors. Be gentle with them in their grief. Show them the depths of your love, a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven. Spare them the torment of guilt and despair. Be with them as they weep beside the empty tomb of our risen savior, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amen.
