Scripture Reading
Isaiah 66:13
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
Reflection
On this Mother's Day, we celebrate the tender, fierce, patient love of mothers — and we find that Scripture reaches for this same image to describe God's own love. A mother's comfort is intuitive, bodily, and total; it is the first love we know. God says his comfort is like this — not cold and distant, but warm and close and knowing. Whether your relationship with your mother is whole or wounded, today is a day to receive the mothering comfort of God and to honor those who have given it.
Prayer for Today
Creator God, thank you that you made the universe and everything in it. You made mankind in your own image and have promised an inheritance of eternal life. I thank you for the life of my loved one, the love I received from him/her, and the memories that I cherish of him/her. I rejoice in your promises of pardon, joy and peace to all those who love you. Show me mercy in my grief and give me joy through your Holy Spirit. Comfort me in my grief, Lord. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Amen.
