Saint of the Day
St. Peter the Apostle
St. Peter, born Simon bar-Jonah in Bethsaida, was a fisherman called by Jesus to be one of the Twelve Apostles. He was the first to confess Jesus as the Messiah and was appointed leader of the apostles. Despite his denial of Jesus at the Passion, he was restored and commissioned to "feed my sheep." He led the early Church in Jerusalem and later served as bishop in Antioch and Rome, where he was martyred by crucifixion (upside down, at his own request) under Emperor Nero around 64-68 AD. The Feast of his Chair celebrates his teaching authority and the unity of the Church.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 16:15-18
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Reflection
Peter's confession is not primarily a statement about Peter — it is a revelation about Jesus. The authority of the Church flows not from any human strength or perfection but from this foundational recognition of who Christ is. The Feast of the Chair of Peter celebrates the gift of unity and leadership in the Church, grounded not in marble and ceremony but in faith.
Prayer for Today
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that one day You would bring into my life a boyfriend that is walking with You, a man of God that loves You with all his heart, a man that is growing in grace and maturing in the Christian faith, for Lord I long to one day be married to a man who will be my spiritual covering, a man who will love me as Christ loved the Church, my spiritual leader and adviser.
I pray that You will bring the right man into my life and that You would prepare both our hearts in the way of godliness and Christian love, so that we may one day walk in spirit and truth in the bond of love.
Lord, I know that we are not to be unequally yoked together in our relationships and marriages, that we are to be on the same spiritual level with the same love of Jesus and the same love of truth, and so I pray that You would bring into my life a man that loves You and is maturing in the faith, and who is himself seeking to follow Your guidance in the matter of his own future relationship and marriage.
I pray that You would bring into my life the right boyfriend, a future husband who will guide me and our family to live together in the manner that You have instituted in Your Word, and guard me I pray, from making the wrong decisions based on my feelings rather than Your leading. Into Your hands I entrust my future life to You. I ask this in Jesus' name,
Amen.
