Saint of the Day
St. Sylvester I
Sylvester I was Bishop of Rome (Pope) from 314 to 335, presiding during the momentous reign of Emperor Constantine I. Though not a notable theologian himself, his papacy oversaw the Council of Nicaea (325), the construction of the great Roman basilicas including Old St. Peter's, and the dramatic shift of Christianity from a persecuted movement to a favored religion of the empire. New Year's Eve is known as "Silvester" in many European countries in his honor.
Scripture Reading
Psalm 31:14-15a
But I trust in you, Lord; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hands.
Reflection
On the last night of the year, one verse is enough. My times are in your hands. Not in the hands of chance, not in the grip of circumstances, not hostage to the decisions of powerful strangers — in your hands, Lord. As this year closes, we entrust its griefs and its graces to the One who was before the year began and will be after the last year ends. We cross the threshold into the new year held.
Prayer for Today
Have mercy, O Lord, on all those tied with us in the bonds of friendship and family, and grant that they, with us, may be so perfectly conformed to your holy will, that being cleansed from all sin, we may be found worthy, by the inspiration of your love,
to be partakers together of the blessedness of your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
to be partakers together of the blessedness of your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Amen.
