A Sword Through Your Own Soul

Saint of the Day
St. Thomas Becket

Thomas Becket (1118–1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered in his own cathedral on December 29, 1170, by knights loyal to King Henry II of England. A close friend of Henry before his appointment as archbishop, Thomas underwent a profound conversion upon taking holy orders and became a fierce defender of the church's independence from royal authority. He was canonized just three years after his death, and his shrine at Canterbury became one of medieval Europe's great pilgrimage destinations.

Scripture Reading

Luke 2:33-35

The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."
Reflection
Simeon's blessing over the Christ child contained both wonder and warning. Mary would carry joy and sorrow simultaneously throughout her life as the mother of the Messiah. The Christian life often mirrors this: the gift of Christ does not insulate us from pain but transforms how we carry it. Even the sword, held in the light of resurrection, becomes part of the redemption story.
Prayer for Today
I Pray that God will meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the children who receive shoebox gifts and their families who are living in desperate circumstances, suffering from poverty, sickness, war, or the effects of natural disaster.
