Scripture Reading
Mark 1:9-11
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
Reflection
On the eve of the Baptism of the Lord, we hear the voice from heaven — the Father's affirmation before a single miracle had been performed, before the crowds had followed, before the cross had been endured. Belovedness is prior to achievement. God did not say "I will be pleased with you when"; he said "I am pleased with you now." This is the identity that baptism clothes us in.
Prayer for Today
May you be filled with the wonder of Mary, the obedience of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the determination of the magi, and the peace of the Christ child. Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever.
Amen.
