Scripture Reading
John 1:9-12
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
Reflection
The world was made through him — and did not recognize him. There is something achingly familiar in that sentence; we, too, live in a world of God's making that does not always acknowledge him. But John's sentence ends with a gift: to all who receive him, the right to become children of God. Not status earned, but identity given. We are not striving to reach God; he has arrived and offered to make us family.
