The Branch and the Vine

Scripture Reading

John 15:4-5

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Reflection
A branch cut from the vine looks fine for a day or two — but it is already dying. Fruitfulness is not something we produce by striving; it flows from connection. 'Abide in me' is Jesus's gentle but urgent call to remain in conscious, daily communion with him. Prayer, Scripture, worship, and community are not religious duties but the channels through which his life flows into ours.
Prayer for Today
Lord, the light I choose to let into my life today is based on my trust in you. It is a weak flame, but I so much desire that it dispel a bit more darkness today. Today, I just want to taste the longing I have for you as I go to the meeting this morning, carry out the responsibilities of my work, face the frustration of some difficult relationships. Let this candle be my reminder today of my hope in your coming.

Amen.
