Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. ... May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us — yes, establish the work of our hands.
Reflection
On the last day of the year, Moses' ancient prayer is exactly right: teach us to number our days. The year now passing had sorrow and joy, failure and grace, unanswered questions and unexpected gifts. To number days is not to become anxious about their brevity, but to receive them as the irreplaceable gift they are — and to ask that God establish, make permanent, the good that was done in his name.
Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for the people You have divinely placed in my life who speak holy truth, love and words of wisdom. Give me a heart of discernment to know when You are using someone to speak instruction into my heart and my circumstances, and give me the strength and courage to follow through with that advice, even when it's hard. Fill me with peace in knowing that even if I take a wrong turn, Your purpose will prevail. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
